Help! How to sell doujinshi to foreign customers

Submitted by juan on 2006, March 23 - 15:43.

Selling doujinshi to foreign countries is very hard. PayPal not accept adult materials. Wire transfer is expensive. IPMO is not usable for all countries.

eBay's mature category is only for US members. so I can not sell my doujinshi at eBay.

If you have ideas , please comment for this story.

I submit my doujinshis to "Yahoo! Auctions japan" experimentally. look that and tell me it is usable or not.

Some ideas 1) try DLsite.com

Some ideas
1) try DLsite.com and have them put it on the english site too
2) use paypal, and be dishonest about what it is that you're selling. "Consultation services" is a good one or "Donations".
3) Find someone in the US willing to help you sell these on Ebay. Easier than you think. Basically, they set up the auction and then route the money to you. I would expect that you'd have to raise the price to account for payment services charging more for overseas money exchange.
4) have a drop-site address where people can send cash. Warn them, of course, of the risks of sending money through the mail, and that you can't be responsible if you don't get the money. Remind them that's why services like Western Union and Paypal were invented. Then remind them again that Paypal doesn't like people selling porn on their service.
5) Use Stormpay.com, they don't care what you sell, at least as far as I am able to tell. Though they do take a higher percentage off the final sale amount, so your price has to reflect that.

Stormpay is change their AUP...

Effective immediately StormPay Inc. will no longer accept payments for sales made outside of StormPay Auctions.

I tried to sell doujinshi at Stormpay autions but that auctions not allow adult oriented items.

DLsite is change their AUP last year. At their new regulation, the scene containig cutting body parts must hide. So doujinshi like 'Tasatsu Shigan (Applicant for death)' is not fit for DLsite.

Using paypal with "service" or "donation" is very risky, if they know what happened, my account will closed and I will lost money.

I'm asking some credit card providers. But...

You could sell some other

You could sell some other non-adult item (like a signed piece of paper or something) on your site, and include one of your doujinshi as a "free gift". That way you aren't *technically* selling adult items.

Maybe a service such as kagi.com would work (I did not read their AUP, though).

How to Sell doujinshi on Ebay

There are numberous ways to sell doujins on Ebay without getting caught, but some require some work before being able to sell them.

Ex: Covers from Boys' Empire are very graphic, so if you place a picture on Ebay its an auction death-sentence, but in order to sell them, you have to remove or cover anything remotely visual, and I don't mean putting bubbles or black squares, because then Ebay will know what you are selling. If you use photoshop for example, add clothings covering all body parts, any sign of human fluids must be removed as well, you don't have to make it too decent, but simple swimsuit or underwear will do good for covering. Also if there are any indications of this is an adult item remove it.

Also, if you want to add additional pics on the auction itself, again, make sure you don't show any nudity whatsoever, kissing, making out is fine as long as they have clothes on.

Now for the title, you cannot use words like shota, hentai, adult, these words will not work. You have to be clever and go around it, use japanese titles instead of english, such "Boys' Empire" use "Shounen Teikoku" also add "Hard Romance Doujinshi" Or "Hard Yaoi Doujinshi" to which they may apply. This is a technicality, as your customers should know what you are selling but at the same time not raising any suspisions.

As for accepting payments, this is a tricky part, you can accept IMO, cash, Paypal, but only by request(as I do it) so no one can type in anything they shouldn't so your account won't get shut down, Kagi.com the same system used by jpqueen, I don't know if you can sell things directly from them, but asking never hurts as they sell things worldwide, as for any other ways, I'm sorry to say I don't know at the moment, but hopefully this should help you sell some things without getting caught, unfortunately this is not for everyone and it is a hassle.
